Susan Nicholas Gephart, a 1979 BFA graduate of PSU and nominated Distinguished Alumni from Montgomery County Community College, has been painting award winning landscapes “Plein Air” for thirty years. Susan’s deep appreciation of the earth is seen in her colorful, impressionistic pastels and oils, mostly painted "Plein Air." Susan has shown with The Pastel Society of America, The Art of the State of Pennsylvania, won Best of Show in The Central Festival of the Arts, and is in the permanent collections of The Penn Stater Conference Center, Penn College, Lock Haven University, and The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art. Susan organizes May and October annual artist retreats at Hameau Farm Studio in Belleville, PA., where she supports positive alternative uses of farmland.
“Focusing on the landscape, my goal is to capture the beauty of our fragile earth and convey a message of importance. Keeping my mind’s eye open for unique, electric reactions in pastels and oils continues to excite and rejuvenate my ongoing love of painting Sky, Water, and Earth.”

"People have said my watercolor paintings are "fresh and spontaneous", and that is the beauty of watercolor. I paint plein air or conceive them "out there" where I must work quickly to catch a scene before the paint dries or the light moves. The atmosphere of the sky, the season, and the place is all around helping with the inspiration. Being out of doors painting gives me focus and soothes. Sometimes I am rewarded with the gift of a sight or sound of our wilder creatures, while standing still."

A lifelong appreciation of open spaces combined with my love of landscape painting has proved to be a very rewarding combination. Living in the Adirondacks of New York state for many years prompted me to record the beauty of the untouched wilderness and raise the awareness of the need to preserve these spaces. The rural land surrounding my current home in Pennsylvania provides inspiration to record the bond that the adgricultural community has with the land. Oils, watercolors and pastels enable me to record the light and how the landscape "feels". I feel privileged to share this through my art.
